Amazon opens first distribution center in Ireland, to hire 500

DUBLIN, Ireland: With the opening of a new distribution center in Dublin, Amazon says it will provide faster deliveries to its Irish customers, including one day service.

Amazon's first fulfillment center in Ireland has opened in Baldonnell Business Park, following the announcement of the plans for the center in September 2021.

Amazon will hire 500 employees at the Dublin fulfillment center, which will include filling positions for engineers, HR and IT professionals, health, safety and finance specialists, along with operations managers.

"We are delighted to have opened the doors of our first fulfillment center in Dublin this week. We are focusing on welcoming our new team and preparing the site in readiness to start delivering to our customers across Ireland," said an Amazon spokesperson, as quoted by SiliconRepublic.com.

The 630,000 sq ft building will be used to pack and ship products for customers in Ireland and Europe.

Stefano Perego, VP of Amazon's fulfillment center operations in Europe, said last year that the new Dublin fulfillment center would allow for "one-day delivery on hundreds of thousands of items."

To date, Amazon's customers in Ireland were served by its UK fulfillment center. However, there were additional charges to customers in Ireland post-Brexit.

Wages at the new Baldonnell center are starting at €13.50 per hour, said a company official.

Amazon opened its first offices in Ireland in 2004, along with a customer service center in 2006.

In 2020, the company said it would seek to hire an additional 1,000 employees in Cork and Dublin over the following two years.

With those hirings, Amazon would employ 5,000 in Ireland.
